Fairview firefighters were called to the scene of an auto accident on Tuesday April 12, 2011 shortly after 8am, reporting injuries. When firefighters arrived they found a 2 car rear-end collision in front of the Violet Avenue Sunoco with each vehicle having a sole driver occupant in each. The driver of the rear car involved was out walking around reporting no injuries and the driver of the front car was still in his car reporting back pain unable to remove himself from his car. The driver reporting this was assessed and it was determined to use the hydraulic rescue tools (Jaws of Life) to remove his driver's door and the support member behind the door to properly treat and report him from his car for transport to the local hospital.
Upon this decision to extricate the vehicle's driver and his report of untolerable pain, the incident commander requested DC911 dispatch to relocate an engine from the City of Poughkeepsie F.D. to the Fairview firehouse and an Advanced Life Ambulance from Mobile Life Support Services to the scene to assist. The victim was extricated safely in about 10 minutes and then transported to St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie, NY, his injuries were not believed to be too serious.
The driver of the other vehicle refused medical treatment and transport. The accident is under investigation by the Hyde Park Police Department. Traffic was able to reroute through the parking lot adjacent to the accident scene.
